2011: The Battle Of The Smartphone Operating Systems

The most recent reports regarding market share of current smartphone operating systems (OS) in the UK show that there is three clear companies leading the way. As of Q3 in 2011 for the UK, Nielsen discovered that Android sits on top with a huge 44% of the ‘Smartphone Operating System Market Share in Q2 2011′. Followed by the Blackberry OS developed by Research In Motion (RIM)with 25%. In third place is iPhone OS with 28% of market share. Windows Mobile although making many new innovations and announcements with the most recent update called ‘Mango’ will no doubt cause for extra competition for the final quarter of 2011.

The iPod was released in 2007 and ever since it has lead the way in terms of usability and has set the path for future standards of not only design but features. The latest OS the OS 5, has recently been released to the public with mass appeal and improvements over the previous versions. But according to the latest studies Google’s Android OS is running on more phones than Apples OS. With Android adopting the ‘open source’ mantra allows for many companies to adopt the ever advancing and improving OS to use for with their own devices, which target many different kinds of demographics. Whereas The iPhone and all of Apple’s products are particularly purchased by early adopters and those with spare income.

The Blackbery OS must not be forgotten and has gained 2.1% market share since the previous quarter. With current mass appeal with the younger generations it proves top be successful with the current Blackberry Messenger (BBM) service, although since the recent launch of Apple’s OS 5, they have included a similar service that may draw potential customers from Blackbery.

A Technology Recipe for Success

In today’s fast-paced environment, it’s difficult to follow all the developments in technology. As a result, small business owners often make poor technology choices for their business because “they don’t know what they don’t know” about technology. Establishing best practices is the key ingredient to ensure a recipe for technology success.

First and foremost, one must assess the business’ technology needs. Does the business rely heavily on email? Is everything driven and run through a specific line-of-business application, e.g. legal software, accounting software, or ERP system for manufacturing? In many service industries, most users simply need email, Web access and basic document and spreadsheet sharing.

Once the needs are identified, business application selections are made which leads to decisions about in-house vs. cloud-based servers. Assuming an in-house solution is selected, it is strongly recommended to use virtualization technology on servers combined with a strong backup solution. Virtualization allows your business to efficiently leverage server hardware resources and gives you flexibility for future changes and disaster recovery.

A strong backup solution should include first and foremost all critical business data. Second, it should run automatically with as little user-intervention as necessary. And, lastly, it should proactively notify you of any potential issues that may occur.

Businesses are encouraged to develop well-thought-out data storage practices. These days, business data follows the Paerto principle, 80% of the data is “there” and not used. Only 20% of the data is meaningful to your business. By thinking through your data storage practices, your users can easily access and reference the data they need.

When it comes to the actual users, the following should be emphasized:

  • Business-class desktop or laptop models with adequate memory and CPU speeds, generally less than 3 years old, and running a current operating system, be it Windows 7 or Snow Leopard/Lion

Computer Maintenance

Recently a mate of mine had a stroke. A heart attack if you like. The cause was a blocked artery. The solution for the problem was for a stent to be inserted to allow blood to flow. A contracted or blocked artery can bring the whole show to an abrupt end. A tube was inserted at the groin area and the stent passed through to the chest and into the heart. There the stent is placed. Wow, what a procedure!

A very similar situation occurs in computers when information is trying to pass through, lets call them arteries, usually called buses to transfer all those zeros and ones. A computer is a finely constructed machine. The use of parts like incompatible RAM can cause problems with bus speeds and cause a computer to crash. A virus can also be designed to overwork a processor to the point where a computer will simply come to a stand still. Incorrectly assembled hardware can also affect the transfer of the information. A short for example will seriously hamper the performance of a computer and if connected to an internal speaker will produce a series of annoying beeps.

So the best thing for a healthy life style for your computer is maintenance. Adopt the use of protection software, there are many on the market all vying for their market share. Having one is better than having none. Download a free version and pay to upgrade to the next level if it works well.

Here is a list of things that should be regularly checked to maintain a speedy computer.

1. Firstly, don’t expect an old computer to keep with the pace of modern programs. Update the whole machine to prevent getting bogged down in a mass of information.

Apple Vs Amazon

Apple’s iPad has been able to outperform its competitors of lower price, and offer a better value-per-dollar compared to other tablets of equal or greater price. For all intensive purposes, Apple has enjoyed a comfortable stranglehold on the tablet market, with the freedom to charge whatsoever it pleased – until now. On Wednesday, September 28, Amazon released its next generation of Kindles. The Amazon Kindle was the original e-reader, offering many thousands of books and other reading materials on a lightweight, easy-to-read handheld tablet. Amazon is still offering this basic Kindle, and now offers a Kindle that has 3G wireless capability, allowing its users to download new materials, at no additional charge. These rudimentary reading devices have never offered a true threat to Apple’s iPad in the past though. It is only the introduction of Amazon’s newest Kindle, the Fire, that is making Apple feel the heat of competition.

Amazon is releasing their newest product as the direct competitor to the iPad, and they are wielding the sword of cost-savings. The Amazon Fire is capable of providing its owner with all of the reading, viewing, and listening content available through Amazon.com. Subscribers are even able to access media on a unlimited basis for an annual fee of about $80. Although the Fire does not offer the computing capabilities of the iPad, it challenges entertainment portion of the iPad directly. Now that there are two strong companies in the market for tablets, and vying eagerly for any customers in this relatively new market, each must take a strong stance in its corner of the ring, and establish a rock-solid foundation and strategy which will be able to both compete directly with the other, and differentiate itself enough as to justify the difference in cost.
